before ella was born i made dozens of fitted diapers, all different kinds, and i LOVED them, i love using cloth for oh-so-many reasons. i kept making them as she grew, but by the time she was 10 months old she had grown out of all but the prefolds that i bought from my friend dina at nopins4baby, and i just haven't found the time to make another set of fitted diapers in her size. i never got the hang of folding the prefolds well, the way i did with flatfolds (which i also love but that is for another post). so for a while we alternated with using the prefolds and some disposable, but i've been dreaming of the day we get back to just cloth.
well--that day is a dream no more! i had a brainstorm in the night, and this is the result, a fitted diaper made from a prefold, inspired by another friend kimi at new conceptions.
this is the best-fitting diaper she's ever worn, even though this particular prefold is one size up for her. it is trim, the front panel doesn't bunch up or droop as she moves, and it has plenty of room for her cute thighs. and talk about quick--this took 20 minutes from start to finish!
instructions on how kimi does this are at sew your own diapers, i used her basic idea but with these modifications: instead of elastic at the back and sides, i used fold over elastic, which let me elasticize and bind the whole thing in one pass. i put baby soft loop on the front panel, and aplix hook on the wings with aplix loop on the fold backs. i got the baby soft loop and the aplix from sherrie at sewingsupplycoop at yahoo.
i'm going to convert the rest of my prefolds to fitteds this week, but i plan to make a few more modifications, such as a different aplix configuration for the wings. more pictures as i get them done, but for now, i'm calling this a stash reduction because heaven knows, cloth diaper fanatics are stash addicts. for each diaper i'm giving myself 5 points for cutting them because that is the hardest part, psychologically speaking. i've had the baby soft loop and aplix for over a year, i'll give myself 1 point for that, so it looks like 6 points per diaper. yippie!
